Our goals

Staples has worked hard to develop and put into motion a new sustainability strategy — one that focuses on how we can have the most positive impact on the environment while also meeting the needs of our customers and our business.

Reduce global carbon emissions 75% by 2020 from a 2010 baseline

Our initiatives and progress

Staples offers more than 10,000 products with environmental features in stores and online, including Staples' own Sustainable Earth™ brand products.

Initiative 1 of 8

In late 2010, Staples launched a "Race to the Top" initiative, engaging with key suppliers to find innovative solutions for reducing the environmental impacts of packaging and product design and manufacturing.

Initiative 2 of 8

Staples has invested in renewable energy sources, including hosting solar arrays on our building roofs, piloting fuel cell technology, and purchasing green power for our operations. Currently, 100% of our electricity purchases are green.

In 2012, we helped our U.S. customers recycle more than 72.4 million ink and toner cartridges. We also helped U.S. customers recycle more than 12.7 million pounds of technology waste.

By putting 53 all-electric trucks on the road, and limiting our top truck speed, Staples is reducing fuel costs and air pollution.

Staples uses energy efficiency techniques to reduce energy consumption in our buildings. We have also certified many of our buildings to recognized environmental standards like ENERGY STAR®, LEED® and ISO 14001.

Staples® Copy & Print use 50% post-consumer-recycled, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper as the standard offering.
